- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 1/2 cup butter
- 2 cups finely-chopped onions
- 2 lb ground beef (lean)
- 8 strips finely-chopped bacon
- 8 cloves garlic, chopped
- 6 Tbsp finely-chopped parsley
- 2 Tbsp salt
- 2 tsp dry crushed red pepper
- 2 cups canned tomatoes (or 2 cups canned tomato juice)
- 1/2 cup red wine
- 2 cups tomato purée
- 4 Tbsp tomato paste
- 2 finely-chopped carrots
- 4 stalks finely-chopped celery
- Pepper to taste

- Warm olive oil in saucepan over low heat. Add butter and simmer until melted.
- Add onion and saute until golden. Add ground beef and bacon, sauteing until brown, stirring occasionally.
- Add garlic, parsley, salt, blacj and red pepper, then cook over low heat for at least 10 minutes.
- Add wine, cover and steam for a few minutes more.
- Add tomatoes, purée and paste. Bring to a boil and add carrot and celery.
- Again, cover and cook over very low heat for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
